Ways To Treat, Prevent, And Remove Split Ends

Updated: Oct 6, 2020

I have clients that never want to get their ends trim, let alone a hair cut. So let's talk about this: No matter if your hair is relaxed, color-treated, natural, or curly, low or no heat styling options, and protective styles, the hair evenly needs a trim. If your goal is not to grow long hair down your back, well-moisturized ends are still crucial for an overall healthy head of hair.

What are split ends and what causes them?

The cosmetology definition for "Split ends" refers to the splitting or fraying of the hair shaft, most commonly affecting long hair. When the hair becomes dry, brittle, and frayed, the hair shaft will resemble the end of an unraveled rope, making your hair look like a feather. Excessive use of blow dryers, flat irons, chemical products, and rough handling when combing and brushing the hair wet or dry can cause split ends.

How can you tell if I have split ends?

If you notice small pieces of hair on the floor or longer hairs with no bulb at the top of the hair strand, and the hair looks thin like it was split or hard to detangle it is time for a trim. I know, you are probably saying, "I do lots of deep conditioners," but nothing is working. What am I doing wrong? More than likely, it is time for a trim. More importantly, when you are malnourished and are not getting enough protein, vitamins, and minerals from food or supplements and not drinking plenty of water. As a result, the hair follicles' natural oils are unable to travel down the length of the hair, making it look dry and frizzy.

What can I do about my split ends?

Keep in mind that the ends are the oldest and most weakest part of your hair, and they need to be handled with extreme care. Hair masks are deep conditioning treatments that help restore moisture to hair and strengthen hair shafts. They're great for concealing split ends and improving your hair's overall appearance. However, this will not last forever, so it's better to get rid of split and dry ends sooner rather than later. In general, split ends can impact your hair's overall look and, if left unmanaged, would cause hair damage over the long term.

However, this will not last forever. The key to split end prevention is to, at some point, go and see your stylist. You'll need to schedule a consultation to have your hair analyzed by someone who will give you a professional opinion. Preferably at least twice a year or as needed.
